Bhutan is renowned for its commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural preservation. To maintain its unique heritage and environment, the country implements a “High Value, Low Volume” tourism policy. Here’s what travelers need to know:

Bhutan Travel Policy & Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

Visa & Permit Requirements

All visitors (except Indian nationals): A visa is required and must be applied for before arrival through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator.

Indian nationals: No visa is required, but a permit must be obtained before arrival or at the border.

Bangladeshi & Maldivian nationals: A visa is required and can be obtained online or at the border.

Entry Points: Paro International Airport (air) or land borders at Phuentsholing, Gelephu, and Samdrup Jongkhar.

Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

The SDF is a daily fee charged to support Bhutan’s development, cultural preservation, and environmental conservation.

Note: Visitors staying less than 24 hours in border towns like Phuentsholing, Samtse, Gelephu, or Samdrup Jongkhar do not pay SDF if they stay within the designated zone.

A licensed Bhutanese guide is mandatory for all tours.
